sturdy, with lots of activities
This work bench delighted my 6-year-old boy. He really enjoyed playing with it and building little projects. The pieces are made of smooth (not likely to cause a splinter) wood and are painted in vivid colors, mostly black and orange, against natural wood. There are holes along the little shelf to store the wooden pegs and tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc.) and a tray on the bottom that is big enough to hold all the wooden bolts, etc. It comes with many, many bolts and screws and a lot of building links you can use to create a car or truck (using the instructions provided) or even a silly, make-believe "device." My little boy also uses it as a desk and sits and watches his dvds on our portable dvd player. The work bench is not terribly tall, so I think older kids (say 8 and up) might feel silly or awkward sitting at it.
I think even a 2- or 3-year-old child would have fun, althouth I don't know if it is recommended for the younger set due to the small parts. Because you can do the free form building of projects, the younger kids might not get too frustrated--they would have fun tinkering with the parts and using the vise and just spending time at the work bench doing "busy work." There are a lot of parts that come with the work bench, so you have to make sure your child learns to tidy up and put them away (on the bottom part of the work bench) when he's finished or you might lose some parts. Even if your child does lose some parts, there are so many that he won't miss them.
The work bench feels solid without a hint of "ricketiness." My handy husband assembled the workbench with only a few grumbles of frustration--he said one of the provided screws started to "strip out" but he seemed satisfied that this would not present a problem. I am impressed with the good quality of the work bench.
